Ryan half expected Jimmy to come into his room after his run, just like the night before. He didn’t. Ryan figured that maybe he would come to him that night. No go either. In fact, Jimmy didn’t talk to him at all that day, or even the next day. Jimmy went back to his sad howling during the night, which just made the depression that Ryan was dealing with even worse.

Their time together was running out, and they weren’t even talking. Ryan must’ve done a better job of pushing Jimmy away than he thought, and even when he tried to tell himself that it was for the best, he couldn’t believe it.

It scared the hell out of him when Jimmy came into the cabin one day with two oars for the boat.

“You were in my shed,” Ryan said, trying not to let the sight of those things scare the hell out of him.

Jimmy shrugged. “The door was open, and I saw them.”

“I’m not strong enough to row you to shore. Those are for emergency only,” Ryan said.

“I’ll be strong enough. Soon. I can feel my strength returning, and the rain has almost completely stopped,” he said nodding to the window.

It was just a calm drizzle now, and a fog had rolled in. Other than that, the storm had passed. Ryan wished the storm would pass in here as well.

“I’ll make a try for it tomorrow. I still want you to come with me.”

Ryan looked away from the oars and up at Jimmy. His jaw was set and his eyes were hard.

Ryan swallowed, and it hurt his throat. “I don’t…I told you…”

“I get that you’re trying to protect your sister,” Jimmy said. “If I had my brother back, I would be doing everything I could to keep him safe, too, so I do get it, and when we get out of here, I’m going to contact Mason, tell him what’s going on, and we’ll find her. We’ll keep her safe, you too. You don’t have to be here anymore. You can come with me.”

Ryan felt like crying again. His throat was killing him in that way that preceded tears, and he couldn’t seem to catch his breath.

He felt like he was falling when Jimmy rushed around the island counter and grabbed onto his shoulders. This time it was to steady him instead of push him into a wall.

“It’s okay. Baby, you’re okay,” Jimmy said.

“Do you mean these things? Are you serious?” Ryan asked, and now he was the one clutching at Jimmy’s arms. He felt desperate and wild all of a sudden, like if he let go of Jimmy, the man would vanish in front of him.

Jimmy smiled at him. “I mean it. Of course I mean it. I would never, ever want anyone or anything to hurt you, or keep you locked up here. I love you.”

Jimmy might as well have reached his hand inside of Ryan’s lungs and grabbed all the air he had and taken it away for the effect those words had on him.
